1898

Sestroretsk

Russian M91

February 25, 2023

This 1898 Sestroretsk M91 was found hidden in an old house in Finland. It is likely one of the rifles that Germany shipped as aid during the Finnish civil war. Boxes of German-made 7.62x54R ammunition and a bayonet with a scabbard were found along with it, as well as an Arisaka type 38 rifle. The Mosin had a canvas sling on it that was sewn directly to a leather loop at the magazine but that unfortunately didn't survive. Recommendations for a period-correct sling setup are welcome.

The rifle has some signs of early Finnish modification, like the extra notch filed on the rear sight and i believe the nails that add tension to the barrel bands were done in Finland too. Front sight appears to be original. There are no Finnish markings on the rifle that i can see. German markings on the stock and butt plate.
