M24 Stepped Barrel

M24 rifles are Russian M91s that have been re-barrled by the Finnish Civil Guard. Many M24s eventually became Finnish military property. This rifle does not have the SA mark, suggesting it never became a military rifle. Because of this it has a great bore. The numbers on the side of the barrel shank indicate the Civil guard District this rifle was used in. The stock is in extremely rough shape, but I like it.
I am VERY curious if anyone knows what the letters on the tang mean. It should be the date of manufacturing, but this one looks to only have the Tula hammer and the letters BN. The lower section of the tang has an SH. I can not find any info on this. It does not have a grease hole.

I can't be 100% sure (I'm still researching this), but it is likely the receiver is an 1894 Tula. It seems during that year, they did not usually stamp the date on the tang, and they also did not stamp a crest on the receiver. After 1894, you should almost always expect to find both of those on a Tula receiver. Before 1894 should have a grease hole in the receiver
Wow, beautiful rifle! It looks like the receiver is early soviet Tula production, because it hasn’t an imperial eagle, letters BN are actually V.P, in russian В.П.(военная приемка), military proof commission marking, can say it as Russian! But the letters S.H. are strange, but interesting! In the near future I’ll be in Tula arms museum, and will try to ask a familiar museum archive worker about this marking)
