Description

The inscription identifies the 4th Company of Railway Guard Detachment I, part of Landsturm Battalion Braunschweig I (X/13). This unit was a territorial reserve unit raised in the Duchy of Brunswick as part of the German Army’s Landsturm, composed mainly of older reservists mobilized for wartime service in 1914. During the First World War this battalion was employed primarily in rear-area security roles, including railway guard (Bahnwache) and infrastructure protection in occupied Belgium, freeing younger frontline troops for combat. Notice the solider on the right has an M91 with an early finger rest, dating to 1892 or 1893.
