Description
This photograph depicts an Austro-Hungarian sentry guarding the entrance to a military tunnel in the Primolano–Val Brenta / lower Monte Grappa sector of the Italian Front during the First World War. The tunnel is cut directly into karst limestone, characteristic of the region and widely exploited for shelters, depots, and covered access galleries in Alpine warfare. The guard is armed with a captured Russian M1891 Mosin-Nagant, reflecting the common Austro-Hungarian practice of reissuing serviceable Russian rifles to security and second-line troops after the Eastern Front campaigns. The image is attributed at the lower right to Photostelle II, one of the official Austro-Hungarian army photographic detachments active on the Italian Front in 1916–1917, documenting troops and critical infrastructure behind the lines.
